Following an impressive display over the weekend, Ghanaian international Mohammed Salisu has been named in WhoScored’s Team of the week alongside Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku and Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Salisu has been a fixture of the Southampton team this season, following an uninspiring debut season which was largely disrupted by injuries.
Although his side are yet to find their rhythm in the league this season, the Ghanaian has impressed, winning his second man of the match award of the season.
In their latest game against West Ham, Salisu and his defensive partner, Stephens put in an incredible performance as they held the Hammers to a goalless draw and prevented Antonio from continuing his blistering start to the season.
His performance earned him a place in WhoScored’s Team of the week joining the likes of Lukaku and Ronaldo.
Salisu was joined in defence by Liverpool’s Trent Alexander Arnold, Manchester United’s Luke Shaw and Everton’s Michael Keane, while Senegal’s Edouard Mendy was also included in the team.
Justifying the inclusion of Salisu in the team of the week, WhoScored indicated:
“Southampton were backed to struggle against high-flying West Ham over the weekend, but held firm to secure a point at St. Mary’s. Mohammed Salisu has become a first team regular following a debut season in England disrupted by injury and he put in another man of the match shift, his second of 2021/22, to help Saints to a result against the Hammers as eight clearances, four interceptions and two tackles helped the 22-year-old to a WhoScored rating of 7.92”.
Salisu will be hoping to keep up his form over the weekend when his side face defending champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
If selected, he will be tasked with the responsibility of taming the talented City attack of Gabriel Jesus, Jack Grealish as well as Ferran Torres.
