Following the news that it had sacked the head coach of the Black Stars, CK Akonnor, the Ghana Football Association has indicated that it will appoint a new replacement in the next 72 hours.
CK Akonnor’s time with the team was brought to a premature end, with the GFA deciding to terminate the contract of the former Kotoko head coach.
While his overall performance during his tenure has been far from inspiring, CK Akonnor was sacked based on his latest games against South Africa and Ethiopia in the Qatar World Cup qualifiers.
The Black Stars could only pick 3 out of a possible 6 points in the said games.
With the position now vacant, the GFA has announced that it has constituted a three member committee to appoint a new head coach in the next 72 hours ahead of the team’s next fixture in October against Zimbabwe.
“The Executive Council has formed a three (3) Member Committee made up of Vice President Mark Addo, Upper East Regional Football Association Chairman, Alhaji Salifu Zida and Dr. Randy Abbey to find a Head Coach and Assistant Coaches for the Black Stars within the next 72 hours,” a statement from the FA read.
Prior to the sacking of CK Akonnor, there were reports in the local media of two time AFCON winner Herve Renard being the next coach of the Black Stars.
The Frenchman is considered as a candidate, particularly because of public admiration of the Stars.
“Of course, coming back to coach Ghana will be a fantastic challenge but no one knows tomorrow.
“Ghana was on top but now a little bit down. The potential is still the same.
“One day, it will be your management and your government that decides that we want to bring this man or maybe we don’t want him because we don’t like him.
“How can you refuse to be interested in a team that always gets close and not win? So, this will be a fantastic challenge,” Renard told TV3’s Juliet Bawuah in an interview last year.
The Stars currently have three points after the opening games of the 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifiers and will hope to bounce back when they play Zimbabwe next month.
