Footballers who turn to energy drinks to keep them active during and after games should desist from this, as they risk damaging their health, a sports health expert has cautioned.
Dr. Chidi Aniemena-George, Revered Sports Scientist cum Exercise Medicine Specialist, revealed this during a seminar for Division One League Clubs organized the Ghana Leagues Clubs Association (GHALCA).
The seminar, a one-day event was held at the Golden Bean Hotel, Kumasi on Thursday September 09, 2021.
According to Dr. Chidi, energy drinks are diuretics that induce the body to release salt (sodium) and water. He explained that this process triggers dehydration in an athlete, who during activity normally produces sweat.
He added that fatigue is an inevitable side effect of energy drink consumption and warned players against making it a habit.
Dr. Chidi took time to lecture on what a footballer should consume before, during, and after games.
He specifically recommended beverages like Coconut Water, Water mixed with Oral Rehydration Salt, and tomato juice.
He took time to enlighten on the various benefits of each beverage and why footballers should consider taking them.
This and many more formed part of Dr. Chidi’s lecture to some officials of Division One League clubs who partook in the seminar.
The AshantiGold medical doctor also lectured on the various aspect of sports psychology and physiology and how it impacts individual players and overall team success.
