The Black Stars of Ghana opened their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign with a home win against the Walia Antelopes of Ethiopia on Friday night in Cape Coast.
A thunderous first half strike from Mubarak Wakasu was enough to hand Ghana the maximum points on the day.
FootballmadeinGhana.com rates the performance of the Black Stars players on the day.
1. Richard Ofori (GK) (5/10)
The goalkeeper was actually calm tonight. Didn’t make much saves, but the few ones that came to him were to stop by the goalkeeper. One of his top saves was his punch from the Ethiopians for which Amartey subsequently cleared the ball to corner.
2. Andy Yiadom (6 /10) – The reading right back was defensively solid but didn’t offer much in attack. He also ssisted Wakasu for Ghana’s goal.
3. Baba Rahman ( 5/10) – Encouraging display from Baba Rahman. Provided the needed support for Jordan Ayew on the left side. Did more in the attack. Need more game time to get back to his best.
4. Alexander Djiku ( 6/10) – Outstanding display from the Strasbourg defender. Was solid at the back and won all the battles. Justified again why he should always be in the starting XI.
5. Daniel Amartey ( 6/10)- The Leicester City defender was solid throughout the game. Made no mistake at the back and won almost all the aerial duels against the Ethiopians
6. Baba Iddrisu ( 5/10)
The Midfielder did a good work in the first half. He supplied some balls to the attack as well as added cohesion to the midfield. The presence of Wakasu made his work easy.
7. Kamaldeen Suleman (4/10) – Average performance from the Rennes youngstar. Struggled to make impact in the game. Showed some flashes of his brilliance in the second half but was withdrawn for Yaw Yeboah.
8. Wakaso Mubarak (6 /10) – Broke the deadlock of the game with a shot outside the penalty box. Work tirelessly in midfield and won many of the duels. Misplaced a lot of passes too.
9. Jordan Ayew (7 /10) – Another a impressive display from the Crystal Palace attacker. Always a threat to the Ethiopians defense. A bit sluggish at some point. Should be more purposely and decisive.
10. Dede Ayew (6/10) – Wasn’t in the game. The skipper struggled to make impact in the game. Was deployed as the arrow head but couldn’t get much supplies from the wings
11. Jeffrey Schlupp (3/10)- Started the game very well but was forced off due to hamstring injury on the 25th minute.
Substitute
Daniel Kofi Kyere (4/10)
Didn’t engage in much in attack when he subtituted out Jeffrey Schlupp. However, the midfielder helped to lubricate the midfield.
Emmanuel Lomotey (3/10)
Came on for Mubarak Wakaso. Wasn’t so aggressive in the defensive midfield role as the Ethiopians kept penetrating from the midfield to the attack.
Yaw Yeboah (3/10)
The Winger did relative well tonight. Some of the Black Stars attacks were championed on his side for which he did help a lot. Was unlucky not to find the ball at the back of net.
