Legon Cities and Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has described his goal against Algeria in the 2015 AFCON as one of the most important goals in his career.
Gyan who has had a stellar goal-scoring career has scored a lot of important goals in his career but pinpointed his strike against Algeria as the most important in his career due to the circumstances before the game.
The former Black Stars captain had missed the opening group game against Senegal due to illness and was also a doubt for the second game as he was yet to fully recover.
The Black Stars however needed a win in their second group game against Algeria to have any chance of qualifying out of a difficult group that had Senegal, Algeria, and South Africa.
Gyan although half-fit made the squad and scored an incredible goal which gave the Black Stars victory and started a run of positive results that propelled the team to the final.
Speaking to TV3 Sports on his illustrious goal-laden career Gyan described his strike against Algeria as one of the most important goals he had ever scored in his career.
“Talking about important goals, I think the one I remember was against Algeria in 2015. There were a lot of things that went on behind the scenes.” – Gyan told 3sports.
“I was seriously sick and had to join the team five hours to the game. I scored and the team went through to the final. It is an occasion I will never forget because I risked my life to save the country.” – Gyan continued.
“I scored a lot of great goals – the one against USA [2010 World Cup], against England [Friendly]. They are very memorable for me but the game against Algeria, I will never forget because of my condition at that time,” Gyan concluded.
