Following two spells with the Welsh club, Ghana captain, Andre Ayew is expected to leave Swansea City when his contract expires at the end of the month.
While his first spell saw him make an expensive move to West Ham (£20.5m) after just a year, the second saw him become a fan favorite and a “King” at the Liberty Stadium.
In the club’s quest to survive Premier League relegation, they brought back the Ghanaian international in what remains a club record deal of £18m in January of 2018.
Ayew has since repaid that faith entrusted in him, becoming the leading goal scorer for the club in two successive seasons with 35 goals in 106 appearances.
But is he now expected to leave the club for a particular reason…
The idea of Swansea taking up the option of extending the Ghanaian’s contract would have been a no brainer if they had succeeded in securing Premier League promotion.
Ayew does not only happen to be the record signing of the club, but is also the highest earner of the club by far with a £80k weekly wages.
With championship clubs struggling to cope with financial challenges posed by the pandemic, the club could not afford to meet those wages again.
Reports of the player also not willing to compromise on a 25% reduction of his wages has also led to his departure.
Swansea were hoping that funds from the Premier League’s TV rights as well other lucrative commercial deals would help retain the services of Ayew, but their inability to secure promotion meant that could not be fulfilled.
Ayew’s departure has now seen the club offering professional contracts to scholars Scott Butler and Michael Murphy while youngsters Ali Al-Hamadi, Jacob Jones and Jamie Searle have been offered fresh terms.
