Bechem United strolled to their first win of the season as they beat WAFA SC by a slim margin at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park on Saturday.
Striker Hafiz Wontah Konkoni celebrated his new deal by firing the match winner to hand Bechem United the maximum points following their draw in their opening game against Liberty Professionals.
Both coaches Seth Osei Were for Bechem and Propser Narteh Ogoom for WAFA, maintained their starting lineup used for match way one in the game.
WAFA started the game on the front foot as the likes of Daniel Lomotey and Forson Amankwah charged the Bechem goal area with their attacking threats.
However, their efforts on several occasions were thwarted by the solid defensive unit of the home side. One such attack led to Bechem goalkeeper Daniel Afadzwu pulling a superb save to deny WAFA taking the lead.
After being on the back foot in the early exchanges, Bechem United will open up play and create chances of their own. The danger Bechem’s attackers posed to WAFA’s defense was telling.
The home side will eventually get themselves ahead in the 25th minute when striker Konkoni outjumped WAFA defender Konadu Yiadom to head his side ahead following a attacking sequence that led to a cross from the left side.
Bechem will dominate play from thence but their failure to double the lead meant they ended the first installment of the game with a slim advantage.
Back from recess, WAFA made some changes to their approach but still struggled to really threaten Bechem.
With the game proceeding in a blistering atmosphere, Coach Prosper Narteh Ogoom decided to refresh his personnel by introducing Eric Asamany for Forson Amankwah inside the 59th minute.
Bechem United also made a change of their own when Clinton Duodu came on for Emmanuel Boakye Owusu.
There were additional changes subsequently with Prince Adu Kwabena coming on inside 68 minutes for Steven Owusu with Coach OSei Were bent on getting a cushioning goal.
The change nearly paid off as Bechem fashioned another opportunity to score but Hafiz Konkoni’s control let him down and saw the away side escape.
With some few minutes to the end of proceedings, WAFA Coach Prosper Narteh Ogoom rang in more changes when he sent on Michael Dwamena for Kevin Boakye Yiadom while Andrews Ntim also made way for Enock Asubonteng.
However the changes failed to change the outcome of the game as Bechem comfortably held on to complete the game with a victory.
The win sees Bechem join Eleven Wonders at the top of he league table albeit for some few hours depending on how results elsewhere goes from Sunday.
