Chairman of the Black Maidens Management Committee, Nana Oduro Sarfo has complained about CAF’s qualification format for next year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The Ghana FA Executive Council Member believes the new format is unfair to countries like Ghana and effectively means Africa won’t have a strong representation at the tournament.
The Black Maidens remain Africa’s best ever representative at the U-17 World Cup after winning bronze in 2012. The team has also participated in every FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup tournament since it commenced in 2008.
The new qualification format sees countries grouped into various zones based on proximity with the winner of each zone booking a ticket to next year’s tournament in India.
In the case of Ghana, the Black Maidens will get to face Nigeria in WAFU Zone B in October next month with the winner qualifying to the tournament. This means one of Africa’s best performing teams at that level of women’s football will miss out on participation at the tournament.
Oduro Sarfo believes this is unfair to Ghana but stresses the Black Maidens will however work hard on securing qualification.
