The 2019/20 football season is in serious doubt as Government announced that the ban on sporting activities has been extended extended until at least July 31, 2020.
President Nana Akufo-Addo-Addo disclosed this during his 10th address on the measures taken against the spread of the coronavirus on Sunday 31 May 2020.
“I have by order of Executive Instrument [EI] provided for these new directions and extended the suspension of the remaining public gatherings as set out in EI.64 of 16th March until 31st July,” the president said.
He added: “In here, I refer to the suspension of sporting events, night clubs, cinemas, drinking spots, bars, beaches, festivals, funerals, political rallies and large religious gatherings such as crusades and conventions,” President Akufo-Addo noted.
He added that non-contact sports events such as golf, tennis, athletics, badminton, table tennis, triathlon and cricket may, however, resume.
The Ghana Premier League has been suspended since March this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Uncertainty remains over whether the current campaign will be completed, but anything running into July would compromise preparations for the following season.
With no conceivable action for at least a month, and every possibility of the lay-off lasting longer, all indications are that the Ghana FA might be forced to truncate the 2019/20 season.
