Former Chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Herbert Mensah has schooled Ghanaian Football administrators on the do’s and don’ts if they want to be successful in their endeavours.
The current Ghana Rugby Association leader was appointed in 1999 to lead a then wobbly Asante Kotoko setup to help restore the earlier glories of the club.
Mensah laid the foundations by implementing a 5 year plan to strategically position the club for conquering not just in Ghana but at continental level both on and off the pitch.
He is often credited for making a major contribution towards changing the face of Ghanaian professional football.
In an interview with TV3 Sports, Herbert Mensah says club administrators often get it wrong by meddling in the affairs of what happens on the pitch when it should be the opposite actually.
He said “Our job (as club administrators) is not to win matches. Our job is to manage football clubs and therefore as chairman of Asante Kotoko, my job was to win off the field”.
“If you win off the field as a sports or football administrator, the winnings on the field will come” he noted.
Herbert Mensah has advised club administrators to not be short-term minded but rather focus on the long term. He believes leaving a legacy by displaying good governance practises is better than just flaunting around money and seeking to buy short term success with it.
“The management of a football club is not telling people how rich you are. That ego maniacal way is not the way. It is by showing good governance so that when you leave, whoever that comes after you is in a position to say this is what I’ve got” he concluded.
