Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko striker Eric Bekoe says the mountain of issues plaguing the club and hindering their success is as a result of disunity among the various stakeholders.
Asante Kotoko, often seen as a giant of a football club in Africa have in the last three decades failed to hit the top and rub shoulders with the best across the continent like they did in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
Kotoko’s solid displays during that era saw them win the Africa Cup of Champions Clubs trophy twice (what is now the CAF Champions League) and subsequently emerge Africa’s club of the century as selected by the IFFHS for the period of 1900-2000.
However, the club’s stock has plummeted over the last 2 decades and the Porcupine Warriors have dropped way below the ladder to climb to attaining relevance at the continental level.
Analysing the cause of the club’s woes, Eric Bekoe told TV3’s GPL Express Show that the canker of factionalism is Kotoko’s main scourge.
“There is not oneness, there is division, whereby when a certain Kotoko management is in power, there is a certain circle that will be fighting the management” Bekoe told TV3.
The 2007-08 Ghana Premier League goal king says no matter the differences that exists between the various factions, Kotoko’s interest should always remain preponderant lest the club continues to bear the brunt.
“No matter the grievances, we should know that Kotoko is paramount. Kotoko should be our first priority that we need to worship and cherish” Bekoe remarked.
“If we don’t do it that way and every circle is going to support a certain management it will kill the team and Kotoko will lose” he concluded.
