Ex-Kotoko star Eric Kwabena Bekoe has added his voice to the ongoing debate regarding the status of the 2019-20 Ghana Premier League in the wake of the global pandemic COVID-19.
The Ghana FA resolved to suspend all football competitions in line with government directives to ban social gatherings due to the CoronaVirus outbreak in the country.
The situation is similar to what is happening globally as the disease continues to plague humanity and decimate the sporting sector.
Some football leagues have already started taking decisions about their suspended competitions.
In the Netherlands, the 2019-20 season has been scrapped, Ajax Amsterdam will not be crowned champions but will have the joint ticket to the Champions League with AZ Akmaar after the two teams tied on points on the Dutch league. However, the Dutch league will maintain the status quo with no promotion and demotion.
Eric Bekoe who won the Ghana Premier League goal king in the 2008/2009 season, says the Ghana Football Association must follow suit and declare the two league leaders on the log as Ghana’s participants in the African Champions League and Confederations Cup respectively.
“I think Ghana should go the Dutch way by declaring the table toppers as our representatives in Africa while maintaining the status quo for the next season’s league by avoiding promotion and demotion”.
“If the team above cannot raise the needed funds for Africa, then the team that follows should be given the opportunity” he told Kumasi based Akoma FM.
