Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Kudjoe Fianoo has waded into the debate as to whether the trend of player salary cuts and deferrals due to the CoronaVirus outbreak can be implemented in Ghana.
Football clubs worldwide are considering and putting into practice measures to half expenditure and minimize their losses in a period where all sporting activities have grind to a halt due to the disease that has been termed a global pandemic by the WHO.
The likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and others have worked out wage slashing arrangements with their staff.
This has triggered discussions across the local media about the possibility of such measures being implemented here in Ghana.
Kudjoe Fianoo who has vast experience working with Ghanaian clubs however believes there should not be a one size fits all approach towards looking for remedies to some of the challenges we face.
He disagrees with the slashing of salaries because players don’t earn that much as compared to those in Europe.
He told local station Kumasi FM in an interview, “in calling for slashing of players salaries in our diaspora, we are all aware of the amount paid players which some of them are even owed for months”.
“Will club executives even have the courage to say this to their players in this situation, he asked?
Fianoo has further revealed that he has engaged the leadership of the Ghana Football Association on how to best protect the interest and welfare of the footballers.
“I have held talks with the GFA president to know the next line of action in this situation. The welfare of the players is very important and we will find a possible solution to it” he concluded.
The Ghana Football leagues are currently suspended after the GFA enforced a directive by the government to ban all forms of public and social gatherings due to the CoronaVirus outbreak.
Ghana has so far recorded 152 cases of Covid-19.
