The Black Queens failed to defend their WAFU Zone B triumph after losing 4-2 on penalties to their West African rivals Nigeria in the semi finals of the competition but head coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo isn’t disappointed.
The Black Queens knocked out the Super Falcons in the 2017 edition and went on to win the competition, but will now have to settle for third or fourth place after their defeat to Nigeria.
Speaking to the media after the game, Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo insisted she is not disappointed with her team’s elimination after matching the African Champions boot for boots for the entire duration of the game.
“I’m not disappointed at all, when Ghana meet Nigeria is like a sister and a sister, this is exactly what happened last year. We met Nigeria at this stage and beat them.
“This is a revenge time for them. They have done the same thing to us.
“Tactically, we were disciplined in the first half. We dealt with the athletic and well physique players of Nigeria. My defenders were able to withstand them,” she said.
She continued
“Like I said Nigeria is a tough side, African champions. When Ghana meet Nigeria it is always a tough game. Fortunately nobody was able to score.”
Mercy Tagoe also refused to blame her players for the two penalty missed.
“Penalties is everyone’s game. The least mistake the goalkeeper does it will cost is team.
“I will say no. Penalties is full of uncertainties, even the best players miss penalties. You can be the best player on the pitch but will miss your penalty. So I don’t think it was inexperience,” she added.
Ghana will face Mali in the battle bronze on Saturday.
