Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif has revealed that the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium will soon undergo massive renovation.

The sector minister made the revelation after visiting and touring the facility on Thursday May 11, 2023.

The visit was to offer the Minister an opportunity to ascertain some of the major challenges of the facility and the measures required to ensure its facelift.

After touring some significant parts of the facility for over 30 minutes, the Minister admitted that the stadium needs to undergo a major renovation exercise.

“The regional director has briefed me that this facility has 10 years lifespan for renovation to be done. So that is the essence of this inspection to see the challenges this facility is going through and take steps to renovate it.”

According to the Minister who doubles as the MP for Yagaba-Kubori, renovations started across Ghana with Accra and Kumasi getting some facelifts.

“We started with the Accra Sports Stadium, where the 1st, 2nd and 3rd phases are done and completed. We moved to the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, 1st phase is done, the contractor is about to move to site for the 2nd phase, Essipong is currently being worked on,” he added.

“There is the need for us to do a major renovation here (Aliu Mahama Stadium) too,” he added, explaining why the Aliu Mahama Stadium deserves the facelift.

The Aliu Mahama Stadium was constructed in 2008 as one of the host facilities for the 2008 AFCON hosted by Ghana.
