The head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Augustine Eguavoen has admitted that his side’s approach to last Friday’s game against the Black Stars failed to work as planned.
The Super Eagles played Ghana last Friday, as the two sides battle out for one of five spots available for African countries at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
The first of the two legs saw the game ending in 0-0 draw at the Kumasi Baba Yara Stadium, with the host being particularly impressive on the night.
Coach Augustine Eguavoen also took notice of the performance of the Black Stars and established a relationship between that and his team’s failed approach in Kumasi.
Speaking to NFF TV, the Super Eagles head coach indicated that Nigeria’s plan was to take the game to Ghana but that did not work out as the Black Stars defence led by Daniel Amartey were ‘tough’.
“The team is in high spirit we are more than half way through I had word with them and praised them because they were resilient,” Eguavoen said.
“They worked hard in such an atmosphere in Kumasi and so I think it was a fair result.
“We have to take the game to Ghana. We tried to take it to them on Friday but they were tough at the back especially the defence led by Amartey, he was good.
“But we had two, three clear chances we should have buried but we were just not calm enough in the box. But we will try to work on how we’ll give those final balls to our attackers to have easy passage to goal.”
The Black Stars are expected to have their last training session at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Nigeria today ahead of Tuesday’s clash.
The winner over the two legs will qualify for the World Cup in Qatar which is slated for November 2022.
