The Confederation of African Football could dish out sanctions to Nigeria for allegedly switching off the lights at the Moshood Abiola Stadium during Ghana’s training session.
The Black Stars of Ghana were forced to train in the dark at the stadium on Monday evening as lights at the facility were switched off by Nigerian officials, footballmadeinghana.com can confirm.
As per CAF stipulations, Ghana was supposed to have unfettered access to the facility to adequately ready themselves for Tuesday’s make or break World Cup playoff second leg tie.
The lights at the stadium suddenly went off and there were no attempts by the Nigerian officials to restore power for the training session of the Black Stars to continue.
Reports from the Black Stars camp indicate that the lights were turned into ‘disco’ mode, going on and off until it eventually went off to stop the training completely.
FMIG earlier reported on the matter and after gaining traction across various media platforms, CAF’s attention has been drawn to the development.
From earlier signals, the continent’s football governing body has condemned the draconian tactics of the Nigerians and are likely to follow up with sanctions for Ghana’s West Africa neighbors.
CAF and mother football body, FIFA frowns on developments that infringe on fair play and are set to open independent investigations into the matter.
Nigeria could therefore be sanctioned for this development as it massively infringes on the principle of fair play.
Nigeria face-off against Ghana in the second leg of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Playoff tomorrow with kick-off set at 5pm GMT.
The first leg ended goalless meaning, Nigeria would have to win at all cost to qualify outright.
For Ghana, scoring and avoiding defeat will be enough to seal qualification.
Another goalless draw will leave the tie undecided and requiring more minutes to decide who books a ticket to the tournament in Qatar come November this year.
