Nigerians have been palpitating over their chances of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar as they prepare to face Ghana in a crucial qualifying game, FMiG has gathered.
The Super Eagles have activated vexation mode as anxiety grows in their camp over their ability to outduel Ghana in Tuesday’s win or bust encounter and make the cut for the Mundial.
This follows a goalless result against the Black Stars in Kumasi, last Friday.
The game at the Baba Yara Stadium was the first of a two-legged affair with the winner over an aggregate scoreline making it through to the tournament which starts in November.
Having drawn goalless, Nigeria’s task is made more difficult as they face a Ghana side with absolutely nothing to lose and not shy of confidence.
Per tournament regulations, Ghana getting on the scoresheet in the second leg tomorrow while same time avoiding defeat will crush the world cup dreams of the Amaju Pinnick-led NFF and the Super Eagles team.
The permutational analysis reveal that the only way out for Nigeria is to beat the Black Stars to qualify outright or repeating the first leg result would send the game to a decider via penalty shootout.
The major worry for the Super Eagles is how they can shut out a Ghanaian side rich in young and enterprising attacking talents from getting on the scoresheet as the game dynamics and approach changes from that of the first leg.
With Nigeria needing a goal, they are likely to push all out in search of a match opener.
Such an approach would leave a team so solid in the middle and at the back open for Ghana to dissect.
In relation to beating Ghana outright, the first leg performance of the Super Eagles also doesn’t really indicate that happening leading to much anxiety in the Nigerian camp.
The situation is no different among football fans in the country as per FMIG’s reporter from Abuja, the technical team has been inundated with messages from the the fans about changes that need to be made concerning the starting eleven to do battle on Tuesday.
The case is quite different from the Ghana camp as officials and players are more relaxed and upbeat about the team’s chances ahead of the second leg.
Nigeria will host the Black Stars on Tuesday March 29 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium with kick-off slated for 5pm GMT.
The sleeplessness of Nigerians is resulting from how they can avoid Ghana from scoring while scoring to win the game.
A score-draw will see the Black Stars cruising to Qatar while a goalless encounter will push the game into the lottery of penalty kicks.
