Head Coach of Medeama SC, Umar Rabi in Medeama’s 1-0 victory over Bechem United last Sunday at the Akoon Park resulted to a 3-5-2 formation, which he hitherto had never been deployed by the gaffer all through the first round of the team’s fixtures.
Speaking to the media after the game on his decision to depart from his usual 4-man defensive system to a 3 back formation with three center backs, Vincent Atinga, Baba Musah and Kofi Asmah, pushing left back Benjamin Abaidoo upfront as a left wing back and Darlington Gyanfosu on the other side of the wings.
“I have watched a lot of Ghanaian clubs. From how they play, if you want to attack with your fullbacks, you end up playing a 2v2 at the back.
“You saw it in Hearts against Kotoko. In the first 10 minutes, Hearts could have scored Kotoko because they had about four chances which were all 2v2 and I didn’t want that to happen because Bechem have sharp attackers. So I tried to outnumber them to ensure Medeama always played 3v2 at the back”, said the young gaffer.
The Yellow and Mauves started the second round of the league on a high note after losing their last two matches of the first round to Accra Lions and Dreams FC.
Medeama, 29 points, will travel over the weekend to wrestle with Bibiani Goldstars in the return leg in their bid to remain in the title race, which they are 11 points adrift league leaders, Kotoko.
