Hosts, Cameroon, got their AFCON campaign off to the perfect start as they beat Burkina Faso by 2-1.
The Five-time African Champions began the game on the front foot threatening the Burkinabe goal area in the opening exchanges.
The game would however spin on its head as the Burkinabes would take a surprise lead against the run of play after some piece of shaky goalkeeping from Goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Gustavo Sangare was gifted a goal after Onana flapped Betrand Traore’s cross and Sangare cooly slotted into the gaping net.
Cameroon would however not be ruffled by the early set back and consistently mounted pressure in search of an equaliser.
The hosts efforts finally paid of as Betrand Traore who assisted the opener, gave away a penalty after fouling Andre Zambo Anguissa in the penalty box.
Captain of the Indomitable Lions, Vincent Aboubakar stepped up and calmly slotted home to give the silent Olembe Stadium a renewed voice.
The noise decibels would go a notch higher after Cameroon were awarded their second penalty in the space of eight (8) minutes after Issoufou Dayo lunged into a reckless challenge in the penalty box.
It was take two for Vincent Aboubakar and the Cameroon captain made no mistake from the spot once again as he exhibited great composure to send Goalkeeper Hervi Koffi the wrong away and find the back of the net.
The second half resumed in very much the same fashion as the first commenced; Cameroon pilling on the pressure and Burkina Faso holding off their attempts.
Aboubakar thought he had clinched some piece of history for himself when he scored his third of the game and looked to have bagged an opening day hattrick for himself. His joy and that of the thousands in attendance at the Olembe Stadium would be shortlived as the goal would be ruled out for offside.
Neither side were able to add onto their advantage despite carving out opportunities for themselves. Cameroon secured an opening day win and go top of the table while Burkina Faso will be bottom of the group standings.
