Head Coach of the Black Stars, Milovan Rajevac has explained the reason why Dreams FC right-back Philemon Baffour made it into the 28-man squad of Black Stars for the 2022 World Cup Qualifier doubleheader against Ethiopia and South Africa.
Baffour was named as part of the squad for last month’s qualifiers against Zimbabwe but was unable to get any minutes from both games as Milovan Rajevac preferred to use Daniel Amartey in the right-back position.
His latest call-up is the sixth time the full-back has received an invitation to the senior national time since 2020 but is yet to feature for the team.
Milovan Rajevac while addressing the media after the Black Stars squad announcement disclosed his inclusion is on merit and the defender will be given his opportunity when the time arrives.
“Philemon was part of the Ghana team that won the U-20 AFCON, and he has quality. It is important for young players to take their chance when they get it, and for Philemon, I’m sure his chance will come,” – Milovan Rajevac stated.
The Serbian tactician also explained his reasons for starting Daniel Amartey in the right-back role in last month’s home and way tie against Zimbabwe.
“I took over the team a few days to the doubleheader against Zimbabwe, and I had to go with players I knew better. That’s why I opted for Daniel Amartey,” Rajevac said.
“In that situation, we had to win, and could not afford to make mistakes, so I went for Amartey because I know him better.” – The Serb concluded.
The Black Stars will face Ethiopia and South Africa in their final two World Cup Qualifiers.
