Newly promoted Real Tamale United mark their return to the Ghana Premier League with a home game with Accra Great Olympics on Sunday.
The Match Day 1 encounter takes place at the Aliu Mahama stadium in Tamale; a venue which hasn’t hosted a premier league fixture since 2013.
The home side fended off stiff competition to secure a premier league ticket in last season’s Division One League (Zone 1) and will be eager to start on a very positive note on their return to the top flight as they bid to stay longer in the competition this time around.
Great Olympics present a tough test, as the Dade Boys were one of the impressive sides in last season’s league. The away side had an electric start to the campaign but their fire fizzled out in the closing stages of the season.
Coach Annor Walker will want more of the same as they begin the new campaign. However, they will have to do this without the talismanic Gladson Awako.
The former TP Mazembe midfielder notched 11 of the club’s 37 league goals last season and his absence will leave a huge gap to be filled by the team.
The game is set to be closely contested but with the home side being slight favorites.
During their 30 year stay in Ghana’s top flight (before their unfortunate relegation in 2013) RTU made their home grounds (Kaladan Park) a fortress. They will want to do same with the Tamale Sports Stadium and will want to start with Great Olympics.
