Athletic Bilbao forward Iñaki Williams has opened up on his decision to reject GFA’s advances to switch his international allegiance from Spain to Ghana.
Despite being uncapped by La Roja, the 27 year old who was born in the basque region to a Ghanaian father and a Liberian mother is not keen on representing the Black Stars.
The pacy attacker confirmed attempts by the GFA to get him to change his mind but he insists he feels Spanish, and wishes someone more deserving of the Ghana shirt took his place.
‘They tried to convince me but I was born in Spain,’ he said in an interview with the Guardian. ‘I don’t forget my origins, my family’s roots but I feel Basque and I can’t con anyone. I wasn’t born in Ghana and I wasn’t raised there.
‘I don’t have my roots and culture there, I think there are players for whom it would mean more.’
Inaki has visited Accra a couple of times, speaks to his grandparents on the phone in the Ghanaian language ‘Twi’, and he says his mum still swears at him in Ghanaian language if he misbehaves, but he adds: ‘I don’t think it would be right for me to take the place of someone who really deserves to go and who feels Ghana 100 per cent.’
