Following Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to South Africa in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, angry Ghanaians have taken to social media to demand for the immediate sacking of the coach C.K. Akonnor.
The defeat which has seen the Black Stars slip to second on the table behind South Africa, has angered Ghanaians who believe the team lack proper technical direction.
Ahead of the game, Ghanaians were already unhappy and unimpressed with the performance of the team in their opening group game of the qualifiers with Ethiopia.
Despite Ghana winning the game by a lone goal through a thunderous effort from Mubarak Wakaso which slipped through the legs of the Ethiopian goalkeeper, the team struggled to find their feet.
Several Ghanaians remains skeptical about the performance of the team but chose to hold back and wait for the results of the South Africa game.
With Ghana losing by a lone goal through Bongokuhle Hlongwane seven minutes to end the game, Ghanaians have not been able to hide their anger, calling on the Ghana FA to show CK the exit door.
The defeat has put Ghana’s qualification to the World Cup in limbo as South Africa jumps to the top of the table.
Social media reactions after the South Africa game clearly indicates Ghanaians are not ready to miss out of the World Cup for the second time after failing to qualify for the 2018 edition hosted in Russia.
With a 40% win ration since becoming the head coach of the Black Stars, the claron call in Ghana is for the head of the former Black Stars skipper.
Of the ten games Akonnor has played since his appointment as Black Star coach in January 2020, Akonnor has won 4, lost 4 and drawn two.
Below are the outcomes of games under C.K. Akonnor:
Mali 3-0 Ghana
Ghana 5-1 Qatar
Ghana 2-0 Sudan
Sudan 1-0 Ghana
South Africa 1-1 Ghana
Ghana 3-1 Sao Tome and Principe
Morocco 1-0 Ghana
Ghana 1-1 Ivory Coast
Ghana 1-0 Ethiopia
South Africa 1-0 Ghana
With these results, Ghanaians are not convinced Akonnor is the man to take the team to the 2022 AFCON and to end the country’s 38-year trophyless run.
Fears are even that the Black Stars may miss out of the World Cup and the earlier a decision is taken on the technical direction of the Black Star, the better.
