The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Leader of Government Business, Honorable Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has held the Ghanaian media liable for the fallen standards of the country’s football.

The Member of Parliament for Suame has lamented why Ghanaian clubs struggle to make strides in the various CAF Inter Club competitions.

Ghanaian clubs have failed to replicate the success chalked in the 1970’s to the early 90’s. During this period Ghanaian clubs dominated Africa, particularly with Asante Kotoko winning the Africa Club of Champions Cup twice (1970 & 1983).

Kyei Mensah-Bonsu who is a self-confessed Kotoko fan disclosed in an interview with Kumasi-based Silver FM, that the media’s role in Ghana Football’s decline stems from unnecessarily hyping upcoming talents like they were superstars.

According to him, this gets to the head of players who either fail to improve by remain static or even regress.

In assessing the state of Ghana Football, Kyei Mensah-Bonsu said “the media is also responsible for Ghana Football’s fallen standards.

“They use all sorts of superlatives and adjectives to hype players who have just began. It’s like there is a new Maradona in Ghana Football but when you get to watch these talents, you eventually see nothing special,” he concluded.

Hearts of Oak remain the last Ghanaian club to win a continental trophy. The Phobians clinched the inaugural edition of the CAF Confederation Cup in 2005. They also won the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup in 2000 and 2001 respectively.
