Great Olympics talisman Gladson Awako has revealed he was surprised when he got his first Black Stars Call-up.
Awake was in sensational form for the Flavours boys over the course of the 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League season which saw him earn his maiden Black Stars appearance.
The former Berekum Chelsea and TP Mazambe forward was a key figure in Great Olympics wonderful season which saw them at some point challenging for the Ghana Premier League title which eventually was won by their city-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak.
Awako earned his debut call-up during the final round of AFCON 2021 Qualifiers and made his debut in Ghana’s 3-1 victory over Sao Tome & Principe.
Reflecting on his Black Stars debut, Awako revealed he was stunned to have received the call-up because he nearly gave up on representing the national team.
“I almost gave up on playing for the Black Stars after returned to Ghana,” he told Asempa FM.
“The season returned to the Ghana Premier League, the league was canceled due to coronavirus but after some of my local mates in the league received an invitation to the Black Stars, I promised myself I will work hard to gain an invitation to the team and I was stunned when I finally got a call up to the Black Stars.” – Awako further added.
