Women’s Premier League and FA Cup champions, Hasaacas Ladies were unable to replicate their internal dominance as they were humbled by Rivers Angels in their first competitive international fixture.
Coach Yusif Basigi’s Ladies reaffirmed their status as the best women’s team in Ghana by convincingly defeating Ampem Drakoa Ladies on two occasions to lift both the Women’s Premier League and FA Cup trophy this season.
The expectation then was that the team would carry their superior form into the maiden edition of the WAFU Zone B Women’s Championship.
However, the Doo Ladies were unable to stand the might of their Group opponents as they lost by two goals to nil in the opening fixture of the tournament.
Yusif Basigi made two changes to the side that last played Ampem Darkoa with Jafaru Rahama making her debut for the side.
Grace Banwah continued to be in the post with Faustina Aidoo and Janet Egyir as the central pair and being flanked by Comfort Owusu and Regina Antwi on the right and left respectively.
Azumah Bugre and Doreen Copson were deployed in central midfield, with Doris Boaduwaa and Jafaru Rahama serving as wingers and supporting forwards to Milot Pokuaa and Veronica Appiah.
Hasaacas Ladies were not their usual threatening self, although they controlled spells of the game, as Rivers Angels from Nigeria scored once in each half to secure all three points.
The team will now be on standby for the second round and will engage AS Police de Niamey in the final round of matches on July 29, 2021.
Rivers Angels FC and AS Police de Niamey will play on July 26, 2021.
