Asante Kotoko legend Francis Kumi has advised the club to revamp its scouting department to help identify and recruit top talents to represent the club.
Kumi who in his playing days was known as the ‘Mystic Man’ believes the club should bring back the good old days when they assembled the best of talents across the country.
Asante Kotoko, once a dominant force not just in Ghana but also across Africa, has become a pale shadow of themselves in recent times. After winning two Africa Club of Champions Cup (1970 & 1983) have struggled to attain such heights, with their last final appearance in an African Club championship happening in the 2004 CAF Confederation Cup.
The club has been grappling with group stage appearances in CAF’s Inter Club competitions while also failing to win the Ghanaian top flight in close to 8 years now.
According to Francis Kumi, Kotoko need to have a re-look at the club’s recruitment strategy most especially how they scout and identify top talents from across the country.
In an interview with Kumasi based Silver FM, Francis Kumi said much depended on the technical team building strong networks nationwide to help in scouting for players fit for a giant like Kotoko.
He said “It all depends on the Coaching department. In our time the coaches toured the regions to scout for the best players. You can’t assemble a best team without doing extensive scouting.
“So if we want Kotoko to dominate like previously, then they have to tour all other regions and do their best selection. If you don’t build your scouting network it will be impossible for you to get solid players,” Francis Kumi concluded.
Francis Kumi belongs to a generation of Asante Kotoko squad that conquered Africa by winning what is now known as the CAF Champions League in 1983.
They had earlier lost to Al Ahly in the 1982 finals and got their revenge a year later.
