Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu has revealed he was on the brink of a move to Liverpool FC until the move failed to materialize.
The time was in 2013 and Atsu had excelled with Vitor Perreira’s FC Porto. After initially moving out on loan in his early years at the Portuguese giants, Christian Atsu had returned to the first team of the Dragons and was an influential player for them.
He helped them to the league title and his performances caught the attention of big clubs across Europe. One of them was Liverpool who showed interest in signing him.
In an interview with The Athletic UK, Atsu said an agent came to Portugal and took him for dinner, explaining the interest from Liverpool.
“He introduced me to Brendan Rodgers and the club made it clear they were interested,” Atsu said.
Porto, however, demanded £3.5 million for the player, a figure Liverpool would not meet.
“I kept telling Porto, ‘I want to go’, but they wouldn’t let me. Eventually, they broke off talks with Liverpool. I was really upset,” he added.
Shortly after, Chelsea showed up, met his asking price and the rest is history.
At age 29, Christian Atsu is now a free agent after leaving Newcastle United.
