Asante Kotoko have moved top of the Ghana Premier League table after defeating Karela United by the odd goal on Wednesday.
The Porcupine Warriors played host to Karela at the Len Clay Stadium, Obuasi for this Match Week 30 encounter seeking to kill two birds with a stone.
They sought to do the double over Karela while also claiming a win to move to the summit of the league table.
The game got off to a solid start with Asante Kotoko making their intentions clear from the onset.
The Porcupine Warriors had an early goal by Evans Adomako disallowed for offside.
Despite protesting the decision, Kotoko’s players pushed forward for the first goal of the game. The much needed goal came after 23 minutes when Fabio Gama sent Emmanuel Gyamfi free on goal. The in form attacker exhbited composure and slotted the ball into the net to put Kotoko ahead.
Kotoko took the lead into the break and returned with their objective remaining unchanged.
However, they conceded a goal in the 61st minute when Diawusie Taylor slotted into the net after profiting from a deflection in the box following a long range shot.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside but after protests from the Karela players and the intervention of the fourth referee Jacob Aduntera.
After some minutes delay, the game resumed with the scores now level.
Asante Kotoko added much verve to their attack and were rewarded with a penalty which was awarded under controversial circumstances.
Referee Aduntera whistled for a spotkick while footage showed the Karela goalie Richard Baidoo got to the ball first.
However the decision stood and up stepped Fabio Gama to effect it for the Porcupine Warriors. The Brazilian expertly dispatched the ball into the net to restore Kotoko’s lead.
The home side held on to end the game with a 2-1 result. This sees them move top of the Premier League table on 56 points with Hearts of Oak (who have a game in hand) dropping to second on 53 points.
