Ghana captain Andre Ayew’s Premier league promotion hopes have been dashed as his side, Swansea City suffered defeat to Brentford in the English Championship Playoff final.
Brentford defeated Swansea 2-0 at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, providing redemption for the Bees who fell short against Fulham in last season’s final.
First-half strikes from Ivan Toney and Emiliano Marcondes ended Brentford’s 74-year absence from the top-flight, while postponing Swansea’s premier league promotion bid to next year at least.
Brentford exploded out the blocks and drew first blood in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
Swansea goalkeeper Freddie Woodman fouled Bryan Mbeumo in the area, allowing Toney to comfortably dispatch his 33rd goal of the season from the subsequent spot-kick.
Brentford were soon two goals to the good after Marcondes swept home from a swift counter-attack.
Try as Swansea did including an Andre Ayew header (which kissed the woodwork and went out of play) they couldn’t find a way back into the encounter.
The development is heartbreaking for Ayew who has in the last 2 years given everything he’s got to ensure he helps bring back the Jack Boys to the Premier league.
He scored 18 goals as Swansea fell to Brentford last year in the Championship Playoffs semi finals.
This year he’s netted 17 times including a crucial away goal against Barnsley that helped secure a final Playoff berth for Swansea.
It remains to be seen what happens next as regards his future.
