The fixtures for Week 24 of the 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League season were played on Wednesday and Thursday, as the races for both sides(top and bottom) of the table continue to shape up for an interesting end.
The small margin of points between teams fighting to survive and those pressing on for the ultimate makes for an interesting visual representation of the league’s competitiveness this season.
Among the aforementioned subject and others, we take a look at the key highlights from Week 24 of this season Ghana Premier League.
GPL Week 24 Highlights
- Flying Porcupines leave chasing pack below
Kumasi Asante Kotoko strengthened their chances of winning the Premier League this season after defeating Ebusua Dwarfs 2-1 at the Len Clay Sports Stadium on Thursday.
The Porcupine Warriors had to come from behind and have winger Emmanuel Gyamfi to thank for scoring in each half of the game to secure them a vital win.
Thanks to Accra Hearts Olympics losing at home to Aduana Stars in the last game of the Match week, Medeama losing at home to WAFA and Karela sharing the spoils with Elmina Sharks, Baretto’s side have some breathing space at the top of the table.
Rivals, Accra Hearts, who won in midweek are the closest to the table toppers with 4 points separating the first and second placed teams.
Certainly, the flying Porcupine have created a distance between themselves and the chasing pack.
2. Legon Cities could be plotting an escape route
Legon Cities bounced back from their defeat in Week 23 to secure all three points against Liberty Professionals.
The win keeps them away from the drop zone and they could even stay clear, further, if they win their outstanding game.
With just 5 points separating them and Ashanti Gold who are in 10th place, they will be feeling optimistic about escaping relegation this season.
Unlike Legon Cities, the future does not look too bright for Inter Allies who, although have picked up four points from their last two games, are still the last name on the table sheet with just 20 points.
3. Can we talk about Salifu?
Can we stop talking about Salifu Ibrahim? Probably not for a while.
The Phobian is in an incredible form right now and it is exactly why it was surprising to see him left out of the Black Stars squad to play Ivory Coast and Morocco in next month’s friendlies.
The player who is popularly known as Di Maria used his lightening speed to finish off a brilliant move by Accra Hearts of Oak in midweek to keep the club’s title ambitions alive.
In the process, he won his 7th Man of the Match award of the season, making him the player with the most MoTM award this season.
If he keeps up such high level of performance, then we will not grow tired of talking about him for a long time to come.
What’s next?
Week 26 will kick off on Saturday with Legon Cities hoping to take down WAFA in order to see their escape plan through.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko also travel to play Liberty Professionals as they vacate the Len Clay premises for Ashanti Gold to host title contenders Great Olympics in what is set to be an interesting match up.
