The Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif has disclosed the budgeted figure for Ghana’s Black Stars’ participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
Cameroon will host the next edition of Africa’s flagship football event early next year with the Black Stars having already qualified.
The team has been charged to win the competition, a feat that will bring an end to a near 40 year drought. Ghana last won the AFCON in 1982 and have fallen short since despite coming close three times – in 1992, 2010 and 2015.
Ahead of the tournament, the Sports Ministry has earmarked $5 million to be spent in Ghana’s preparation and participation.
This was revealed by the recently installed Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif during an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face Programme.
“For the AFCON we are targeting that if we have to get to the finals, $5million should be something that we should be estimating to participate in the AFCON” he said.
The $5m dollar estimate will see a marginal increase in the $4.5 million spent during the fruitless 2019 campaign.
