The president of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt E.S. Okraku has shared his take on the implementation of salary cap in Ghana Football.

The economic situation brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic has further worsened the local football economy leaving clubs to be in an abject state. The resultant effects have resurrected the idea of salary caps for players.

The idea has been mooted in the past and resurfaced during the Covid-19 shutdown. This has generated a lot of discussion on several media platforms.

On the average it is estimated that a local premier league players earns  a little above $100 dollars a month, a figure described as derisory by many connoisseurs of the game.

Calls have been made for the Ghana FA to step in and help improve the situation.

Kurt Okraku who heads the country’s football governing body has suggested that though he’s not against the implementation of the salary cap formula in Ghana Football, there should be caution exercised in how the issue is approached.

He revealed this during an exclusive interview with FootballMadeinGhana.com

“It is a very debatable topic. I think that there are so many stakeholders in this kind of decision making process and we will also differ from  how it is that it has to be done,” he opined to FMIG.

According to the GFA boss, he would prioritize enhancing playing conditions for players and improving player welfare than to simply champion the introduction of salary caps.

“I am for enhanced playing conditions for players and that’s what we are working towards to ensure that players get enough attention, the welfare of players are much improved and ensure that all the basic logistics that players need to be able to compete are provided, ” he said.

“But to cap salaries of players I’ll say we have to be careful. What we need to focus on is improving the general good of the player,” he concluded.
