The Ghana football family woke up to the sad departure of New Edubiase United fan Abass Sumaila who was involved in a gory accident on Sunday on his way to watch his side play their Division One League opener with Achiken FC in Bekwai.
Two other footballers of the club were also involved in the accident but are currently receiving treatment at the Dompoase Government Hospital.
Sumaila, popularly known as Gambo, passed on shortly after he was rushed to the Dompoase Government Hospital following the accident.
The 3 were traveling in a commercial sprinter van with registration number AS 5659 13 to watch their opening Division One League clash with Achiken at the Nana Gyamfi Park in Bekwai.
According to eye witnesses, the Sprinter Van burst a tire while descending the Fomena hill and the driver lost control of the vehicle which veered off into a ditch.
Four people who were passengers on the vehicle died on the spot with two others, including Sumaila, dieing moments after being rushed to the hospital.
According to President of the club, Abdul Salam Yakubu, he was informed of the sad development after the game and rushed to the hospital to confirm the news.
He added that the two players who also were traveling on the van are receiving treatment.
“I was called by some of my brothers at home right after the game who broke the news to me. I rushed there with my brother Joe Abu Salam only to meet Sumaila is dead,” Salam Yakubu confirmed to FootballMadeInGhana.com
The late Sumaila who was the Branch Chairman of the New Edubiase Zongo NDC will be buried this morning per Islamic conventions.
New Edubiase United won the game 1-0 against Achiken FC at Bekwai where they have relocated after spending a season at Fosu last season.
