The Government of Ghana has announced a financial package to support Premier League clubs in these difficult times following the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement dated December 4 from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the President His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo has sanctioned the Sports Ministry to release the first tranche of payment to the 18 premier league clubs.

In total, a sum of GH¢ 900,000 will be paid to the clubs with each getting GH¢50,000.

The statement indicated that government had taken such a decision to help ameliorate the difficult situation of clubs amid the Covid-19 pandemic and also its decision to let local league matches take place behind closed doors.

The decision has had huge hit on the finances of local clubs whose major source of revenue generation hinged on match day ticketing.

However, this decision is expected to be warmly welcome by the football fraternity who have been hammering on the need for such support especially during these tough times.

The statement also noted that the President intends replicating this gesture to other local leagues comprising the National Division One League, Women’s Premier League and the Ghanaian clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
