Legon Cities and Berekum Chelsea played out an enthralling 1-1 draw in the opening game of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season on Saturday evening.
The early exchanges was cagey as both sides tried to impose their will at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The first chance of the game fell to the visitors in the 10th minute, a dangerous ball was deflected on target, only for a moment of Fatau Dauda brilliance to deny an early goal.
Chelsea‘s early wave of pressure resulted in a penalty which was awarded in the 18th minute.
Stephen Amankona converted expertly to break the deadlock and register his name as the first scorer of the new campaign.
Legon Cities reacted positively after conceding, Baba Mahama came close to snatching the equalizer but his header flew just wide.
The crafty midfielder won his side a penalty few minutes later after he was fouled in the box.
Summer recruit Jonas Attuquaye stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to ensure the first half ended 1-1.
The second half was largely dominated by the Royals but a resolute Chelsea defense kept them at bay.
In the end, both sides will be content with a point in their first outing of the new season.
Legon Cities’s next fixture is against city rivals Great Olympics while Chelsea welcome Asante kotoko to Berekum on Matchday 2.
