Ghana National team head Coach Charles Akonnor has given reasons that influenced his selection of defender Yakubu Mohammed into the latest Black Stars squad.
Yakubu, 24 is a former player of Aduana Stars and is curently on the books of Tanzanian club Azam FC.
Yakubu’s inclusion in the Black Stars list for a friendly clash with Mali next month has got many wondering the kind of package he’s made up of.
He joins a list of 6 new players given a shot at establishing themselves with the senior national football team, with other players also returning after some time away from the side.
Speaking shortly after announcing the 23 man squad, Coach Charles Akonnor lauded the versatility and playing abilities of yakubu Mohammed and explained the rationale behind his selection.
“Yakubu, he is a new guy, known in this country, he’s played very well through the ranks of Aduana and now in Azam he is doing well he is the captain of the team,” Akonnor told Ghana FA TV.
“His situation is exceptional because he will play a lot of different positions…holding midfielder and of course right back but his main position is the center back, but we want to have the chance to have a look at him in different areas of the game,” he concluded.
Yakubu Mohammed will compete for a place in the defensive positions most especially center back with the likes of Joseph Aidoo, Kassim Nuhu Adams and another new boy Alexander Djiku.
Ghana will play Mali in a friendly encounter on October 9, in Antalyar, Turkey.
