Ghana coach CK Akonnor has taken a bold step of putting a lot of confidence in Andre Ayew following his decision to retain him as the captain of the Black Stars.
Ayew was handed the armband ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations which sparked controversy leading to the retirement of the then captain Asamoah Gyan.
Gyan eventually rescinded his decision after the intervention of President Nana Akuffo Addo.
It was thought under new coach Charles Akonnor the decision could be revisited with Gyan returning to the fold to lead the Black Stars but the GFA confirmed on Sunday Andre Ayew will remain the substantive captain ending all the speculation.
Retaining Ayew as the captain affirms the confidence Akonnor has in the Swansea City attacker.
Ayew’s leadership qualities have never been in doubt since his time with the National U20 team.
He played a lead role as the captain of Ghana when the West Africans conquered the world to win the U20 World Cup.
His hard work on the pitch and never say die attitude makes him stand tall among his peers.
At 30, Ayew knows time is running out for him to win a silverware for the senior national team and being the captain comes with another responsibility.
Despite leading the team to the round 16 of the 2019 AFCON, AndrĂ© Ayew will be looking to pay back Akonnor’s faith by leading the Black Stars to qualify for the AFCON and 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
