Ghana coach CK Akonnor has demonstrated massive confidence goalkeeper Richard Ofori following his appointment as the second deputy skipper for the Black Star.
The Maritzburg goalkeeper made his debut for Ghana at the 2017 African Cup of Nations and has never looked back since, making 19 appearances for the team.
C K Akonnor’s decision to hand him leadership role just after three years with the national team shows the confidence he has in the shot stopper.
It is yet unclear as to the reason for Ofori as the second deputy but the coach might have looked at consistency and commitment in handing him the role.
To wit, goalkeepers are hardly rotated in terms of call ups and could be one of the reason the gaffer handed him the role.
Ofori has grown to become one of the finest goalkeepers on the continent with his performance in the Premier Soccer League.
Last year, he was handed the match day captain for Maritzburg due to his leadership qualities and the respect he commands in the dressing room.
One of Ofori’s biggest attributes is how he commands his back line no matter the personalities in front of him.
At just age 26, Ofori can keep the post until the next decade if only he can maintain his form.
He has represented Ghana at the U20 amd U23 levels and his experience at that level could lead him in his role.
