Players in the Ghana Premier League will have their loud cries heard if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government returns to power next year, the party’s Communication Director Sammy Gyamfi has revealed.
Each player in the Premier League will be paid ₵1,500 a month, according to the NDC and this is to ensure the best players are retained in the country.
The NDC, who are the leading opposition party in the country, launched their manifesto a week ago in which they outlined the welfare packages for athletes, including footballers on the local scene.
The news swept through the local football scene like bushfire in the harmattan with several football players on the local scene hailing the flagbearer of the NDC – John Dramani Mahama.
Exactly a week after the launch of the manifesto, Sammy Gyamfi has thrown more light on the claims in their document insisting the NDC, if voted into power, will impregnate the Premier League with mouthwatering monthly salaries to enhance their condition of service.
Speaking to Kumasi FM, he indicated that, the NDC will establish the sports development fund and also generate some money from cooperate bodies in the bid to ease the burden on clubs in paying their salaries.
“Every club that plays in the premier league will be supported with funds to settle player salaries,an average money of GHC1,500 will be paid to each player”
“Again, club that qualifies to play in the CAF Inter-clubs competition will also be supported. The inter-colleges games will also be supported financially with this fund”
He, however, hinted that, any club that will transfers a player abroad will be made to pay a percentage into the sports fund.
The mass exodus of players in the domestic top-flight league has affected the standard of the Ghana Premier League and also the performance of Ghanaian teams in CAF club competitions.
The NDC therefore believes that if the condition of service of football players are improved, it will hugely impact positively on the league as the competitions can retain the best players who will ignite the passion of Ghanaians.
Most players who turn out to perform well join other clubs on the continent or move to Europe for greener pastures.
Ghana has been ranked as the second exporter of footballers (311 players) by a survey conducted by CIES report in 2020.
