Ghana coach C.K. Akonnor has retained Andre Ayew as the skipper of the Black Stars following his assumption as the head coach of the Black Stars.
Akunnor was named the head coach of the West African giants in January.
The former Wolfsburg skipper succeeded Kwasi Appiah after he was named as his assistant in Ghana’s double-header AFCON qualifier with South Africa and Soa Tome and Principe.
Ayew was named skipper of the Black Stars by Kwasi Appiah ahead of the 2019 AFCON, taking over from Asamoah Gyan and Akonnor has maintained him for the position.
The charismatic Swansea City deputy skipper whose leadership qualities have been admired by all has been maintained for the role by the new manager.
Ayew is hugely remembered for his role as skipper of the Black Satellites in 2009, guiding the side to win the U20 FIFA World Cup for the first time by an African country.
The former Marseille star is expected to guide Ghana to the 2022 AFCON in Cameroon as well as the FIFA World Cup in Qatar the same year.
Ayew will be deputized by Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey as the first deputy with Maritzburg goalkeeper Richard Ofori as the second deputy.
Akonnor’s appointment as Black Stars coach has been greeted with the outbreak of COVID-19 and has not been permitted the opportunity to taste his first competitive game.
Ghana is expected to come up against Sudan in November when the 2022 AFCON qualifiers return post COVID-19.
