President of Stade Rennes FC Nicolas Holveck has disclosed that Ghanaian center back Mohammed Salisu is closing in on a move to the English Premier League after he turned down his side’s offer.

Salisu has been the subject of interest of some of Europe’s top clubs after impressing for La Liga outfit Real Valladolid.

The 21 year old helped his side to a 13th place finish in the just ended Spanish season after making 31 appearances and scoring one goal.

He has been reported to be nearing a move to EPL side Southampton and with Mr. Holveck’s admission that the player turned them down in favour for a move to England all but confirms it.

In an interview with French Media outlet RMC Sports, Nicolas Halveck revealed why Salisu turned down an approach from his side.

“Unfortunately, we knew from the start, Salisu preferred the Premier League because he is English-speaking,” the Rennes boss told RMC Sports.

“He told us very humbly, and we respect his choice, that the Premier League was his priority. We had doubts about his ability to obtain the work permit in England. It seems that he has acquired this permit.

“He would, therefore, be moving towards the Premier League. We were his first choice in case of non-obtaining of the license. Today, the position of central defender is the priority of our transfer window.”

It is understood that the Southpton deal is worth around £10.9million.
