The Ghana Football Association is set to partner the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) to organize a first ever Ghana Universities Football League.
The initiative, an historic one, will feature both male and female universities and will serve as the platform for unearthing more football talents for the country’s footballing industry.
The move has come to the fore following an engagement between the Ghana FA led by President Kurt E.S. Okraku and the executives of GUSA led by president Shaibu Tanko on Wednesday July 8, 2020.
The meeting allowed for deliberations between the two parties on how ideas can be exchanged for the mutual benefit of the GFA and GUSA and the entire football industry.
The GUSA delegation also included Dr. Dominic Otoo, Vice President, Timothy Mensah, Organizing Secretary and Ali Ibrahim, Financial Secretary.
The rest are Asante Forkuo, Public Relations Officer, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu and Baba Apidogo both co-opted members.
THE FIRST EVER GHANA UNIVERSITIES LEAGUE
The Ghana Universities Football Legaue will be the first of its kind. The initiative being spearheaded by the GUSA leadership is at its formative stage. When fully launched and activated, it will be immense in keeping football at the tertiary level highly competitive.
The initial models suggested comprise having a league structure made up of the various public universities in the country.
There are plans to include the private universities as well as the Technical Universities.
In order not to overload the league structure, consideration shall be given to having Tier 1 and Tier 2 league models.
The Ghana FA shall provide expert advise on the final model to settle on and shall play a huge role in the organising/running of the league.
This partnership arrangement feeds into the vision of the Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku who believes this would better prepare Ghanaian Public Univeristies for the national and international football competitions and overall raise the standards of the game in the country.
OTHER INITIATIVES
The Ghana FA is also working on facilitating educational courses for football players, coaches and administrators to get access to study at the various public universities.
This was put forward to the GUSA executives who readily welcomed the move.
