Black Stars and Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew has spoken for the first time about usurping Tony Yeboah as Ghana’s all time top scorer in the history of the English Premier League, decsribing the feat as a “great achievement for me and my family”.
The 28 year old is having his best season yet as a professional, netting 9 times this campaign.
Ayew has actually started all but one of the 32 games Crystal Palace have played so far in the premier league.
His first goal of the campaign proved decisive in a memorable 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in August last year. Since then, there have been two goals against Arsenal and a string of other crucial strikes including a sublime solo effort to clinch a 2-1 win over West Ham in December.
His latest goal, in Palace’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth in their first game of the Premier League restart, was his 25th overall in the competition, making him the top-scoring Ghanaian player in Premier League history ahead of former Leeds United striker Tony Yeboah.
In an exclusive interview with Sky Sport, Jordan Ayew spoke about how proud he was to be able to chalk this feat.
“Tony Yeboah is massive, maybe the best striker of all-time in Ghana, so to beat his total and get to 25 goals in the Premier League is a great achievement for me and my family, he told Sky Sports.”
Jordan Ayew is offering a version of him Palace fans never saw during his first loan spell there.
He yielded a solitary goal in 20 appearances and looked set for a turn down as regards getting a full contract.
However, an impressive turn out at the last Africa Cup of Nations worked the magic and convinced Palace boss Roy Hodgson to offer him the platform once again; this time around, a 3 year contract.
Ayew unsurprisingly refers to the AFCON experience where he scored twice in 4 games for the Black Stars as turning point.
He said “to be able to perform like that at a massive, massive tournament was a big relief for me and gave me more confidence.”
