To many Ghanaians, the 1992 and 2015 Black Stars squads left indelible memories following their stupendous performances that saw them at the finals in Senegal and Equatorial Guinea respectively but Abedi Pele thinks otherwise.
To the Maestro, Ghana’s best ever Black Stars squad has been the 2010 side that reached the quarter final of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Ghana packed out of the tournament after losing on penalties to Uruguay, in a game Ghana could have won to secure a first Africa but for Asamoah Gyan’s penalty miss in extra time.
Abedi led the 1992 squad to the final against Ivory Coast in Senegal but could not play in the final due to suspension, a game Ghana lost through the lottery of penalty kicks.
And in 2015, Asamoah Gyan guided the Black Stars to the finals against the same Ivory Coast opposition led by Yaya Toure and once again, Ghana failed to win on penalties.
With the 92 squad having the likes of Abedi Pele, Isaac Asare, Frimpong Manso, Anthony Baffoe, Opoku Nti, Anthony Yeboah and other guys, and the 2015 squad impregnated with talented players like Asamoah Gyan, Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, Mubarak Wakaso, Christian Atsu, Afriyie Acquah and the likes, Abedi Pele still believes Ghana’s best was seen at the 2010 World Cup.
In an interview with GTV Sports, Abedi Pele was asked to name his best Ghana team in history.
The former Olympique Marseille talisman did not blink as he chose the 2010 team.
“The 1992, 2010 and 2015 teams were strong in their own merit. I wouldn’t want to go far in my answer but to my knowledge I was in South Africa during the World Cup and the Ghana team was amazing. I saw Ghana play against USA and Uruguay and I can say the best team was in 2000,” Abedi stated on GTV.
“Then the team had performed well in Angola in the AFCON and they were strong, they had everything. The team was gelling and I admired the boys so much in the match against Uruguay. I was sitting with former US president [Bill] Clinton when we played against their national team and he was impressed with our performance so I’ll say the 2010 was my best team,” he concluded.
Ghana’s 2010 World Cup squad had Richard Kingson in post, John Paintsil, Hans Adu Sarpie, John Mensah and Isaac Vorsah in defence, Sulley Muntari, Stephen Appiah, Kevin Prince Boateng and Kwadwo Asamoah in midfield while Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew led in attack.
