Celebrated football icon Abedi Pele has apologised to Ghanaians for missing the 1992 AFCON final due to suspension.
Then captain of the Black Stars, Pele the team’s live-wire was shown a yellow card in the semi-final against Nigeria that effectively ruled him out of the final clash with Ivory Coast.
The Black Stars hit with the devastating development lost the final after a marathon of penalty shootout.
Many have blamed Abedi Pele’s absence in the final as a reason Ghana failed to annex what would have been a 5th AFCON trophy.
Speaking for the first time in a long time about the issue on National Television GTV Sports Plus, a teary Abedi Pele regretted the yellow card he got and narrated how things panned out.
“I regret being booked in the 92 semi-final against Nigeria. And I apologised to my team mates.
“It was tough game but I was determined to get the team to the final. So I was so determined just to get the team there.
“We had the best team and we’re on top. It was a tough game and my concentration was to just get the team to qualify to the final.
“Whether I would play in the final or not, mine was to get my team to the final as a captain. And that’s what I did.
“I, however, apologize to everyone for not playing in the final because many believed if I had played, Ghana could have won the final against Ivory Coast,” Abedi Pele on GTV Sports+
