The Ghana Football Association has cleared the air on the current hubbub surrounding monies owed former Black Stars Coach James Kwasi Appiah.
The erstwhile senior national team head coach has not been paid salaries and bonuses due him for the last 5 months (August-December 2019) of his tenure with the amount exceeding $185,000.
Kwasi Appiah through his representatives have written to the Ghana FA to notify them of the situation and have threatened to drag the matter to FIFA if a way forward cannot be found.
This has generated a furor in the local media space with many blaming the Ghana FA for this occurrence.
However, the FA’s Communication Director Henry Asante-Twum has moved to clarify the issue.
According to him, the football association does not pay the coach but the state and as such they have forwarded his grievances to them.
“In Ghana, the state has always paid the coach and not the GFA. This has been the practice for several decades and nothing new,” Henry was quoted by the BBC.
“The GFA forwarded Kwesi Appiah’s letter to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, so they are working on it. For now I cannot say anymore,” he concluded.
The embattled Kwasi Appiah is, however, likely to run to FIFA to seek redress if the GFA fail yo respond to him favourably.
