Former Ghana international Joe Addo has shared the recipe for new Black Stars Coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor to flourish in his role.
According to the former defender, a privilege has been bestowed on Akonnor (a former Ghana captain) following his appointment, but he stresses that the job is a huge one that comes with likewise immense expectations.
In an interview with Accra based Joy FM, Joe Addo said “I think he (C.K. Akonnor) has a very big job on his hands. It’s a privilege for every former footballer to be at the helm of the Black Stars”.
Joe Addo played for the Black Stars from 1989 and bid the senior national football team goodbye in the late 90’s. He belongs to a generation of stars who failed to win a trophy for Ghana despite coming very close in 1992.
The former Hearts of Oak defender says he feels hurt Ghana’s trophy drought has extended beyond 30 years. He has however expressed hope that his former teammate C.K. Akonnor could be the man to break the jinx.
The caveat however is if he surrounds himself with good company and is welcome to dissenting views.
“It hurts me that it’s been over 30 years, a great nation like Ghana in football, we haven’t won anything. But I think it’s all about time, I hope its C.K’s time,” Joe Addo remarked.
“It’s a difficult job, it’s not easy… it’s very difficult. But I believe that he knows what is at hand and hopefully he will surround himself with the right people. Listen to the right advises; take the criticism in the nice way and bring out the best in the Black Stars”, he concluded.
