Former Accra Hearts of Oak captain Yaw Amankwaah Mireku says he built a home in his first two years at the club despite not earning much through salaries and bobuses.
His revelation forms part of efforts to debunk claims that unless players move to clubs abroad, they cannot establish themselves financially and build a life.
There is a general notion that the local league isn’t lucrative enough therefore players will not be financially sound if they stay stuck.
This has influenced mass player exodus in the local leagues eventually affecting its quality.
Reacting to this on a radio show, Yaw Amankwaah Mireku clarified that although the local leagues aren’t as lucrative as compared to some foreign leagues, one can still build a life if he is financially prudent.
He shared the story of how he was able to build a house just 2 years after joining Accra Hearts of Oak although he didnt earn much.
Amankwaah Mireku in the interview with local radio station Asempa FM rather encouraged players to avoid living extravagant lifestyles as this is what actually plunges them into financial difficulty.
“It is never true that when you play in the local league, you cannot build a sound future. So the current crop of players should not believe these assertions.
“It is not about how much you earn, it’s about putting whatever you earn to good use.
“If you are financially prudent, you will be able to buy for yourself a land. Some of us are examples,” he revealed.
“When I came to Hearts around 1997-98, my signing on fee was 3 million cedis. Within 97-99 I never travelled abroad, I was playing for Hearts of Oak, just salary and bonuses but I was able to build a Chamber and Hall apartment,” he added.
“I was earning just 15 cedis. So they should not be saying that unless you travel abroad you cannot have an established life. It is never true”, Mireku noted.
Over the years, former Hearts and Kotoko star Charles Taylor has always descended heavily on the Phobians for not paying him well hence his inability to build a good life with his earnings from the Rainbow family.
